Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 23rd, 24th and 25th of November, 2012
Ken and Sokha’s wedding will occur in Ba Srae Village, Ba Srae Commune, Angkor Borei District, Takeo Province, Cambodia on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 23rd, 24th and 25th of November, 2012. Ken, Sokha and Ted will be very happy for everyone to join us at the ceremony of this auspicious occasion.

Please also note that the Phnom Penh Water Festival has now been cancelled due to the passing of the former King of Cambodia. It was to occur just after the wedding on the 27th, 28th and 29th of November, 2012. These dates will still be a public holiday in Cambodia and so there will no doubt be something happening at that time.

We went fro a drive to Ba Srae for the weekend to visit the family and to conduct a reconnaissance for the wedding accommodation possibilities. The results of the reconnaissance can be seen in the link on the Accommodation page. In between times we just hung out, talked and laughed, slept in hammocks, watched the kids playing and woke up with the cows and chickens. Here’s a few photos:

This is the state of the road from the tar-sealed road to Ba Srae (the location of the wedding). It’s really good at this point as they have just graded it in preparation for tar sealing.

Sokha’s Aunt’s house. This place will probably have floor space for guests on the day of the wedding.

The local cows and chickens.

Sokha’s Sister-in-law prepare a dress for the wedding. It takes at least a couple of months and is adorned with sequins and all sorts of amazing designs.

This is Sokha’s Uncle’s house. It is about 1km down the road from the wedding village.

Sokha’s Auntie preparing cakes to be sold at the market for later.

Ted gets his provincial bath. Always a lot of laughs when that happens ;o)

Ted and Mum nice and clean and back to normal.

Last weekend we went to visit some of Sokha’s Father’s family who live in a village next to the Tonle Bassac – about 90 minutes south of Phnom Penh. Sokha’s cousin was getting married the next day. We couldn’t attend the actual wedding because it was being held on a Monday – which is a working day for us. It was so great to get there for a relaxing Sunday and we took a few photos and videos of what was happening so you could get an idea of what it might be like at our wedding. See them below:

Getting the chickens ready for the big feats.

Sokha’s Cousin’s son guarding the ‘Num’ – cakes made from rice flour and sweet beans and wrapped in banana leaf

Making ‘Num An Sorm’ – bananas or bean encased by rice and then wrapped and tied in banana leaf.

The super-cute guy wanting to be picked up

Making these cakes is like a process line where everyone has a specific tasks, e.g.: cut the banana leaf to size, fill the rice, fill the bean, tie the cake together etc.. It’s a very happy, fun and sociable time as everyone joins together to make sure things are ready in time for the wedding. This was a job for the women mostly.

Sokha’s Counsin’s Son

Banana leaf preparation

Notice – always woven mats and cushions are used for sitting on. Rarely there is tables and chairs.

The finished product

Tying the cakes together with a banana leaf wrapping. Notice the adept usage of the toes ;o)

Other food preparation activities

One of the other looker-onerers

Cooking some of the prepared cakes. The cakes will be steam cooked within the banana-leaf wrapper – sometimes for hours

Getting all the chickens ready for the wedding. Again – as a production-line type process where everyone mucks in. This was a job for the men mostly.
